The Tsum Valley is one of the most secluded valleys in Nepal. Situated in the Manaslu region, high up near the Tibetan border, the whole area has a definite Tibetan Buddhist feel to it and is quite different from the surrounding countryside. Tsum means ‘the valley of vivid’, which remained closed to trekkers until 2008, preserving its traditional lifestyle, monasteries, and deep-rooted Buddhist practices.
The 13-day Tsum Valley Trek begins from Kathmandu to Machha Khola, following the dramatic Budhi Gandaki river through charming villages such as Jagaat, Lokpa, Chumling, Chhokangparo, Nile, etc. Along the way, trekkers encounter prayer flags, mani walls, chortens, and warm hospitality from the local Tsumba people. Highlights of the trek include visits to revered monasteries such as Mu Gompa, Dhephyudonma Gompa, and Rachen Gompa, as well as a scenic excursion to Ganesh Himal Base Camp, offering breathtaking Himalayan views.
Tsum Valley has a long history of Buddhist Saint Milarepa (born in 1052 A.D.), who is believed to have meditated in this sacred valley surrounded by rocks and mountains. During his travels over 84 years, he had meditated in Piren Phu. It is believed that Milarepa went to a woman’s house as a beggar, but the old woman from Burji Village did not know that it was a great saint and she treated him badly by giving him a gait a piece of buckwheat bread. Later, half of her field became barren. Even today, amidst the fertile land of Burji, there is a small plot that remains barren.
Less crowded, culturally rich, and spiritually uplifting, the Tsum Valley Trek is ideal for travellers seeking an authentic Himalayan experience focused on peace, culture, and natural beauty rather than high-altitude adventure.
