TRIP DETAILS

Mera Peak is one of the most impressive trekking peaks and is the highest trekking peak among other peaks over 6,000m, situated in one of the remote, isolated areas of Khumbu. It is also well known for its most exceptional views of five 8000m peaks like Mt.Everest, Mt.Lhotse, Mt.Cho Oyu, Mt.Makalu and Mt.Kanchenjunga. J.O.M. Roberts and Sen tenzing made the first ascent on Mera Peak on May 20, 1953. We ascend Mera Peak preferably during the spring and autumn seasons, as it’s the best time to climb the mountain for its astounding views of the Himalayan Vista.

20-Day Mera Peak climbing is progressively attracting trekkers and novice climbers to have the feeling of hiking and climbing on snow and experience trekking. Our Mera Peak climbing is carefully designed with steady ascent and a separate day set aside in Khare to allow plenty of time for acclimatization. The usual route to Mera Peak is directly via the Zatra La Pass, but we follow the route that heads south from Lukla and up the beautiful Hinku valley, and later return via Zatra La Pass. Following this route has a few advantages. We not only pass through the beautiful Nepalese wilderness but also through quaint villages, which will give us a glimpse into the rich culture of the locals. Additionally, since the route is longer, it’s better for acclimatization.

Mera Peak climbing is an excellent option for anyone with moderate mountaineering experience. It is a challenging trekking peak due to its elevation, but the technical mountaineering skills requirement is very basic. Besides, Himalaya Sacred Trek and Expedition’s seasoned Sherpa guide will provide us with basic mountaineering training before the actual summit.

Highlight of the Mera Peak

  • Climb the highest “Trekking peak” in Nepal
  • View Cho Oyu (26,906ft), Everest (29,028ft), Makalu (27,765 ft), etc. from the summit
  • Mera Peak climb through the unspoiled valleys of the Khumbu region
  • Beautiful lakes and streams in the Sagarmatha National Park
  • Exciting and adventurous climbing trip

We descend for a while and reach a small bridge. From here, the trail is slippery until we cross the Kari La pass. We will take lunch on the way to Kharthe. We begin our trek after breakfast. After trekking out of Panggom, we will cross Panggom La pass. Then we ascend, walk on a steady path and turn north. We cross the Peseng Kharka Khola first, then, after walking for some time, we reach the Peeng Kharka Danda. We cross Ningsow Khola (stream) before reaching the Ningsow Village. We will have lunch in Ningsow. We reach Ramailo Dada, where the scenery of the village, mountains and river is excellent. Overnight in Ramailo Dada.

Day 07Trek to Chetra Khola (3,015m, 4-5 hours)

From Ramailo Dada, we walk for half an hour and continue to descend to reach Chetra Khola. We entered the Makalu Barun National Park. Our trail from here to Chetra Khola is called the Pasang Lhamu trail. On the way, if we are lucky, we might even come across the elusive Red Panda. Overnight in Chetra Khola.

Day 08Trek to Kothe (3,580m, 6-7 hours)

We walk towards the north on the main trail to Mera Peak. After walking on a trail next to the Majang Khola, we merge with another trail which moves alongside the Hinku Khola (stream). Our trail moves straight ahead towards Tashing Ongma, which has seasonal tea shops. We ascend for 3 and a half hours till we reach the lunch spot. We have lunch in Taktor, then continue the trek. We cross the bridge over the Sanu Khola before reaching Kothe. Overnight in Kothe.

Day 09Trek to Thagnag (4,350m, 4-5 hours)

Today will be about 4 to 5 hours of walking. We follow the west bank of the river bed up the valley to Thagnak. The path is a gradual ascent, and we will have close-up views of Kusum Kanguru Peak and many more Himalayas. On the way, we have a nice view of Mt.Chapate, Mera La and Buddhist Gomba in the lap of a big rock. Thagnak is a summer grazing area with the simplest of lodges and shops starting to develop, and we overnight in Thagnak.

Day 10Rest and Acclimatization Day at Thagnag

Day 11Trek to Khare (5,045m, 2-3 hours)

Today, we can experience an excellent valley opening out to the north of the Hinku Nup glacier and the line of peaks beyond. From Charpatti Tal,  the path descends slightly and crosses a sandy bowl to the strip stream that descends from Dig Kharka. The route continues slightly up towards Khare. From Khare, it is possible to do a glacier session to ensure that everyone is happy with the use of ropes and crampons.

Day 12Rest and Acclimatization day at Khare

Today is the acclimatization day for our high peak climbing day & the next day. The view of Mera from our breakfast table at Khare is particularly stunning. Stroll around and prepare to attempt the peak. Overnight at Camp.

Pre-Climb Training: Our guides will provide training on peak climb techniques and the proper ways of using climbing gear such as the ice axe, climbing boots and crampons, harness, ascender, etc. The training will also use a rope to go up and down. We strongly believe that the training experience will boost your confidence and climbing skills to increase the chances of scaling the summit, as well as to fully enjoy the experience.

Day 13Climb to Mera High Camp (5,800m, 5-6 hours)

This is an exciting day as we climb onto the Mera Glacier and follow it to pass. We have to march through a steep route (about 260 meters). The views make us speechless as we can enjoy the Everest, Makalu, Baruntse, Kusum Kanguru and many other mountains and peaks in panorama. Moreover, we will trek high to High Camp. On the way, we can see the nice view of Mera Peak and the glacier. From High Camp, if weather permits, we will have a panoramic view of Mt.Kanchenjunga far to the east. The camp is located at an excellent point from where you can have some great mountain views.

Day 14Climb Mera Peak (6,470m) and Descend to Khare (8-9 hours)

This is probably the most important and toughest day on this trip. It is usually necessary to rope up for much of the summit approach due to crevasse hazards along the route. As it starts to get light, we enjoy incredible views across to Baruntse (7,129m), Chamlang (7,319m) and Nau lekh (6,360m) with Makalu (8,481m) looming behind. After achieving the summit,  you retrace your steps down to high camp. After taking pictures and enjoying the views, we descend by the same route back to our campsite at Khare for the night’s rest. You will find this day really long, but an inspirational one for your life! Overnight at Khare.

Day 15Trek to Kothe (3,600m, 5-6 hours)

Today, we will hike for like 7 hours to reach Kothe. We descend firstly to Thagnak before continuing to Kothe. At night, we enjoy local wines and foods and relax at the camp overnight.

Day 16Trek to Thuli Kharka (5-6 hours)

You will follow another new route back to Thuli Kharka that stays high on the open hillside. It’s a nice walk through the red rhododendron forest with the beaten trail of the Himalaya of Nepal. We observe the wide range of Mera Peak, Mera North, Mera Central, and Mera South from Thuli Kharka.

Day 17Trek to Lukla (2,860m, 5-6 hours)

We cross the exciting Zatrwa La pass (4,600m) before descending steeply into the Dudh Koshi valley and to Lukla. Then the trail descends steeply downward, so we need to walk cautiously as our shaky legs continuously battle the rocky terrain. After crossing the suspension bridges over the fast-flowing Dudh Koshi and its tributaries, the trail becomes more level and natural. After we arrive in Lukla, we sketch those sore legs and recall the experiences of the last couple of weeks. Overnight in Lukla.

Day 18Flight from Lukla to Manthali (474 m, 25 min) and Drive Back to Kathmandu (1,400 m, 4-5 hours) and Transport to Your Hotel

Morning transfer to Lukla Tenzing-Hillary airport for a short sweeping flight to Manthali airport located in Ramechhap district, facing scenic views of mountains, green scenery of hills and farm fields with nice villages and towns as the flight lands at Manthali airport and drive back to Kathmandu and transport to your hotel.

Day 19Free Day in Kathmandu, Optional Sightseeing Tour

Day 20Transport to the Airport for Departure

Your adventure in Nepal comes to an end today! We will take you to the airport, approximately 3 hours before your scheduled flight. On your way home, you will have plenty of time to plan your next adventure in the wonderful country of Nepal.
