TRIP DETAILS

Ganja La Pass Trek, also known as the Langtang Ganja La Pass Trek, is one of the most adventurous and rewarding treks in the Langtang region of Nepal. Compared to standard Langtang Valley treks, this route is more challenging and demanding; however, it can be successfully completed by trekkers with average physical fitness and strong mental determination.

Langtang-Helambu trek is an excellent alternative to the Everest Base Camp and Annapurna Base Camp treks for those seeking a true Himalayan adventure within a limited time frame and a reasonable budget. It offers a perfect blend of high mountain scenery, cultural exploration, and remote wilderness.

The main highlights of the Ganja La Pass Trek include traditional mountain culture, ancient Buddhist religion, towering Himalayan peaks, glacial lakes, and the authentic lifestyle of local communities. The Langtang region is adorned with ancient monasteries, mani walls, prayer wheels, and colourful prayer flags, revealing the hidden and mystical beauty of this less-explored area. The local inhabitants are primarily of Tibetan origin, identifying as Tamang, Gurung, or Sherpa, and practice Buddhism, which is reflected in the many old monasteries scattered throughout the villages.

The journey begins with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Dhunche/Syabrubesi, passing through winding mountain roads, lush forests, and rural settlements. The trek then continues through Langtang National Park, Nepal’s first Himalayan national park, which is home to diverse flora and fauna, including rhododendron forests and endangered wildlife such as the Himalayan black bear, snow leopard, musk deer, red panda, and langur monkeys.

Accompanied by birdsong, pristine landscapes, and panoramic views of snow-capped peaks, the trail passes through traditional villages such as Thulo Syabru, Bamboo, Lama Hotel, and finally reaches the last permanent settlement of the valley, Kyanjin Gompa (3,830m). Beyond Kyanjin Gompa, there are no teahouses, making camping at Ngengang, Keldang, and Dukpu a unique and essential part of the adventure.

Kyanjin Gompa is majestically situated at the base of Langtang Lirung and serves as the primary destination for exploration and acclimatization. During this period, trekkers can visit Langshisa Yak Pasture, the Yala Cheese Factory, and climb Tserko Ri (5,050m), often considered the crown of the Langtang region. From the summit, trekkers are rewarded with a breathtaking 360-degree panorama of peaks, including Langtang Lirung (7,234m), Ganesh Himal, Manaslu, Annapurna Range, Lakpa Dorje (6,966m), and several other majestic mountains.

The first half of the trek up to Kyanjin Gompa is relatively easy and pleasant, with minimal risk of altitude sickness. However, crossing Ganja La Pass (5,130m) is physically demanding and technically challenging due to steep rocky moraines and snow-covered trails that persist throughout the year. Despite the difficulty, the pass rewards trekkers with dramatic glacier views, serene alpine landscapes, and stunning snow-clad mountains.

After crossing the pass, the trail descends into the Helambu region, passing through Keldang, Dukpu, and Tarkeghyang, before concluding at Melamchi Pul Bazaar and returning to Kathmandu.

In terms of climate, the Langtang region is suitable for trekking throughout the year. However, spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are the best seasons, offering stable weather, clear mountain views, and comfortable trekking conditions. With expert guidance and thoughtful planning, Himalaya Sacred Trek and Expedition ensures a safe, enriching, and unforgettable high-altitude trekking experience.

Itinerary

Day 01Arrival in Kathmandu

Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, complete your immigration and customs formalities. A representative from our company will warmly welcome you and transfer you to your hotel. The rest of the day is free for rest and recovery after your journey. In the evening, enjoy a traditional Nepalese welcome dinner hosted by our company. Overnight in a hotel in Kathmandu.

Day 02Drive from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi (1,460m, 7-8 hours)

After breakfast, we begin our scenic drive from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi. The journey takes us through bustling local markets and densely populated towns before gradually transitioning into peaceful green hills and river valleys.

After approximately four hours, we stop for lunch in Nuwakot, where you can enjoy authentic Newari cuisine. Continuing the drive, we are treated to beautiful Himalayan views, waterfalls, and winding mountain roads. The final section involves off-road driving before reaching Thulo Syabrubesi. Overnight in a lodge in Syabrubesi.

Day 03Trek from Syabrubesi to Lama Hotel (2,500m, 6-7 hours)

After breakfast, we begin our first day of trekking, following the banks of the Langtang Khola. The trail passes through lush forests, waterfalls, and hot springs, accompanied by the soothing sound of flowing rivers. After about three hours, we stopped for lunch. Post-lunch, the trail becomes steeper with zigzag ascents. Crossing a bridge over the Langtang Khola, we continue uphill to reach Lama Hotel. Overnight in a lodge at Lama Hotel.

Day 04Trek from Lama Hotel to Langtang Village (3,430m, 6-7 hours)

Today’s trail is relatively easier as we trek through dense forests, green landscapes, and alongside rivers. We pass a small pond nestled among the hills and continue toward old farmlands and settlements. Lunch is taken at a small teahouse located on a hilltop. As we approach Langtang Village, we pass through a long landslide area where the former village was destroyed.

Upon arrival, explore Langtang Village and relax at a local bakery offering coffee and organic milk with stunning mountain views. Overnight in a lodge in Langtang Village.

Day 05Trek from Langtang Village to Kyanjin Gompa (3,830m, 4-5 hours)

This is one of the easiest and most scenic trekking days. The trail is mostly flat, following the river with magnificent views of the Langtang Himalayas. Along the way, you may encounter yaks, nak, horses, and donkeys grazing freely.

After approximately four hours, we reach Kyanjin Gompa, surrounded by dramatic Himalayan peaks. Upon arrival, visit the monastery and enjoy a well-deserved rest in this peaceful alpine environment. Overnight in a lodge in Kyanjin Gompa.

Day 06Exploration and Acclimatization Day at Kyanjin Gompa

After breakfast, choose an optional hike to either Kyanjin Ri (4,773m) or Tserko Ri (4,984m). Both viewpoints offer breathtaking panoramic views of the Langtang Himalayan range and surrounding glaciers. With a packed lunch, we spend time at the summit capturing photos and enjoying the unforgettable scenery before descending back to Kyanjin Gompa. Overnight in a lodge in Kyanjin Gompa.

Day 07Trek from Kyanjin Gompa to Ngengang (4,200m, 4-5 hours)

Today we trek toward Ngengang, the first non-human settlement of the journey. Starting early, we descend briefly from Kyanjin Gompa, cross a suspension bridge over the Langtang River, and then ascend through rhododendron forests and alpine meadows.

Enjoy magnificent views of Langtang Lirung (7,234m), glaciers, and towering snow-capped peaks. Ngengang is a yak pasture with no lodges, so our team sets up camp and prepares a warm meal. Overnight in a tented camp at Ngengang.

Day 08Trek from Ngengang to Keldang (4,270m, 8-9 hours) via Ganja la Pass (5,130m)

This is the most challenging and rewarding day of the trek. After an early breakfast, we ascend steeply through icy moraines, glaciers, and small alpine lakes toward Ganja La Pass.

The pass remains snow-covered most of the year, requiring careful footing and steady progress. From the top, enjoy spectacular views of the Langtang Range, including Langtang Lirung. We then descend through grassy meadows to reach Keldang, where we set up camp. Overnight in a tented camp at Keldang.

Day 09Trek from Keldang to Dukpu (4,040m, 6-7 hours)

After breakfast, we descend along ridges and farmlands into the Helambu Valley. The trail passes through small settlements before ascending through dense forest to reach Dukpu.

Dukpu is another remote, non-settlement area where we camp for the night. Enjoy a warm meal, share trekking experiences, and relax by the campfire. Overnight in a tented camp at Dukpu.

Day 10Trek from Dukpu to Tarkegyang (2,600m, 4-5 hours)

We descend through rhododendron and pine forests toward the culturally rich Helambu region. Along the way, enjoy distant views of peaks from the Annapurna and Everest regions on clear days. After several hours of downhill trekking, we arrive at Tarkeghyang, a traditional Tamang village with monasteries and stone houses. Overnight in a lodge in Tarkeghyang.

Day 11Trek from Tarkegyang to Sermathang (2,590m, 4-5 hours)

After breakfast, we trek along a gentle trail with small ascents and descents. The walk is relaxing, passing through forests, streams, and waterfalls. We pass Gangyul Village, predominantly inhabited by Sherpa communities, before reaching Sermathang. Explore its three large monasteries and experience the hospitality of this charming village. Overnight in a teahouse in Sermathang.

Day 12Trek from Sermathang to Melamchi Pul Bazar (3-4 hours) and Drive Back to Kathmandu (4-5 hours)

On the final trekking day, we descend through villages and the last Sherpa settlements. Due to ongoing road construction, parts of the trail may be dusty.

Upon reaching Melamchi Pul Bazaar, we drive to Kathmandu via Kakani, stopping briefly to enjoy the scenic views. After arriving in Kathmandu, transfer to your hotel. The evening is free for rest or souvenir shopping. Overnight in a hotel in Kathmandu.

Day 13Leisure Day in Kathmandu

Explore the cultural highlights of the Kathmandu Valley at your own pace. Visit Kathmandu Durbar Square, hike to Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple), wander through Ason Market, find tranquillity at Boudhanath Stupa, or explore nearby towns like Kirtipur. Optional free walking tours are available daily. Overnight in a hotel in Kathmandu.
