Mustang Saribung trek includes three different trekking regions Annapirna, Mustang and Narphu valley. Saibung trekking was discovered in 2006 in the Nepal Himalayas. Saribung is one of the remote parts of Nepal. No sign of modernisation can be seen in this area. In 2006, it was first opened for trekking and was known to only a few trekkers. Saribung peak climbing to 6,324m is another attraction of this trip.Â
We, Himalaya Sacred Trek and Expedition, arrange the Saribung expedition as per the travellers’ choice. The Saribung trekking trail is situated in an isolated part of the Mustang region of the Damodar Himal, close to the Tibetan border.
Mustang Saribung pass trekking is a challenging trekking trail in the mid-western part of Nepal. It’s a breathtaking scenery of three Himalayan mountains, Dhaulagiri (8,163m), and Mt. Annapurna (8,091m). All combined with different religions, geographic elevation, Tibetan monasteries, beautiful landscape and crossing the challenging passes.
This Mustang and Nar Phu Valley trek is suitable for experienced walkers looking for something a little more challenging and energetic. It does require previous trekking or basic mountaineering experience, and it is not necessary that you must be young and super-strong to do this trek.
Autumn and spring are the best times to trek in mustang Saribung pass, but we can arrange customised Saribung pass trekking as per the trekker’s holiday schedule. Minimum two people are required for the Mustang Saribung trek.
Departure Location: Kathmandu
Return Location:Â Kathmandu
We complete our customs formalities at the Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. Afterwards, there will be a representative from our company who will take you to your hotel. We can then spend the rest of the day resting. In the evening, we get to try Nepalese cuisine at a welcome dinner hosted by our company. Overnight in Kathmandu.Â
Today is set aside for peak climbing preparation and briefing. We will organize and check all necessary climbing gear and equipment, review the climbing route and itinerary, and attend a detailed briefing. After completing the preparations, if time allows and participants are interested, we may explore nearby sites. This day ensures everyone is fully prepared as we begin our peak climbing journey from tomorrow.
We start our day early in the morning to go to Pokhara. The view of the Nepalese countryside offers green hills, rivers, farms, etc., around a 5-6 hour drive. A city that offers us the magnificent view of various mountains, namely Dhaulagiri, Manaslu, Machhapurche and other mountains ofthe Annapurna range. Do some last-minute shopping and self-exploration around Pokhara. Overnight at a hotel.Â
We depart from Pokhara and head to Jomsom by flight. Then you will land at the district headquarters of Mustang and begin our trek to Kagbeni, the starting point of the Upper Mustang, where you can keep your eyes busy for the spectacular views of Nilgiri, Dhaulagiri, Tukuche Peak and Dhampus. Kagbeni is the most interesting typical Tibetan village and the entry point of the Upper Mustang for an overnight stop.Â
The trail leads up toward the east bank of the Kali Gandaki that climbs over many ridges as it heads north and reaches Tangbe village. The town is a labyrinth of narrow valleys amongst white-washed houses, fields of buckwheat, barley, wheat and apple orchards. The Nilgiri peak, which dominates the southern skyline of Kagbeni, continues to loom massively at the foot of the valley. Beyond Tangbe, we reach Chhusang Village and cross the river, continuing climbing north up the trail to a huge red chunk of conglomerate that has fallen from the cliff above, forming a tunnel through which the Kali Gandaki follows. The trek now leaves the Kali Gandaki valley and climbs steeply up a rocky culvert to Chele at 3030m. Overnight at a teahouse.Â
Climb continues along steep, treeless, waterless terrain, along the side of the spectacular, steep canyon to pass a cairn of rock at 3,540m. Then the trail makes a long, gradual descent to some shortens on a short ridge, and then the trail descends further on a pleasant trail to Samar. The Annapurna, still dominated by Nilgiri, is visible far to the South. Climb above Samar to a ridge, then descend into a large gorge, and the trail goes into another valley field, crosses astream and climbs up to a ridge at 3,800m. The route climbs sharply up and down over a series of high passes before the final descent to Geiling. Overnight at a teahouse.Â
From Gheling, the trail climbs gently to the interesting pass on our trek, Nyi-La and descends below the blue, grey, and red cliffs. After crossing a steel bridge of the Tangmar Chu (river), we will arrive at a Mani (prayer wall), perhaps the longest and most spectacular stretch and main wall in Nepal. Climbing over another pass at 3,600m, the route makes a long, gentle descent to Charang. The huge five-storey white Dzong and red Gompa is an interesting visit to observe collections of statues and Thankas, as well as many large paintings of the seated Buddha. Overnight at a teahouse.Â
The trail descends about 100m down from Charang, crosses the Charang-Chu and climbs steeply up a rocky trail to a cairn on a ridge and continues to climb. Finally, from a ridge at 3,850m, there is a view of the walled city of Lo. After a short descent, cross a stream, then climb up into the plateau of Lo-Manthang. Overnight at a teahouse.Â
Another day in Lo Manthang gives you a chance to explore its many sights, the Tall Champa Lhakhang (God House), the red dzogchen Gompa, Chyodi Gompa and the Raja’s Palace; as well as to gaze at the surrounding panoramic views of the Tibetan Plateau and the Himalaya. Besides Lo Manthang, there are two other interesting valleys worth visiting. The western valley Tingkhar, the site of Raja’s summer palace, Kimling and Phuwa, as well as the Gompa of Namgyal (The Monastery of Victory), is the newest and most active Gompa in Lo Manthang. In the eastern valley lies the village of Chosar, also rich in Gompas and the valley is the main trading route to Lhasa. Overnight at a teahouse.Â
Today we started our trek, gently descending downward, but before reaching Dhie village. It’s a steep downhill walk for half an hour, and we reach Dhie village. After crossing Dhie village, we come across the river on a metallic bridge and also enjoy walking on the bank of the river. Now we have a steep climb up for about an hour and some gentle, steep walking before coming to Yara. Overnight at a tented camp.Â
We spent the day exploring Yara village. Today we will visit the Luri Gompa (also known as Kagyukpa cave monastery). This gompa was founded in the 13th century and has its own religious importance. After visiting the monastery, we head towards Damodar Kunda. This place is popular amongst Hindu pilgrims. We can find black ammonite fossils here, which were collected and worshipped by Hindus and Buddhists as a form of God Vishnu. Overnight stay at a tented camp.Â
Today we climbed to reach Luri Cave Monastery and visit that interesting cave Monastery. After that, we follow the barren valley after crossing the 5,100m pass, and we prepare a packed lunch due to no appropriate cooking possibilities on the trek. Overnight at a tented camp.Â
The trek will start after breakfast and continue with an up-and-down trail on this day. After crossing another 5,600m pass, we will reach the high altitude Damodar Kunda. We need to make lunch packs due to no appropriate cooking possibilities on the trail. Overnight at a tented camp.Â
The day is an exploring day around Damodar Kunda /Lake, where you enjoy the magnificent Damodar Kunda and the surrounding area. Overnight at a tented camp.Â
Our destination for the day is the Japanese Base Camp. We will follow a small path that takes us to Kharkas, where we can see sheep grazing all along. On reaching the Japanese Base camp, we can see a large chorten built by the Japanese, therefore named the Japanese Base Camp. Overnight stay at a tent in the Japanese Base Camp.Â
Â
Today, we left the Japanese Base Camp and moved towards the High Camp. The initial part of our climb starts from the left bank moraine of the glacier. This part of the journey is quite difficult due to the snowy path, which makes walking difficult. We must pass across a snowy glacier horizontally to reach the other side of the bank. We join the right bank of the moraine and open up to the High Camp, where we can get some splendid views of towering peaks like Damodar Himal and Khumjungar Himal. Overnight at a tent in High Camp.
Today is a free day at High Camp. We spend our day exploring the surrounding places and acclimatising to high altitudes that are essential for our expedition journey ahead. Overnight stay at a tent in the High Camp.
Today is an exciting day where we summit the peak of the Saribung peak. We wake up early in the morning and climb up to the summit of Saribung. We will climb up for around three hours on the same moraine. After climbing for around three hours, we find a crack in the ice which separates us from the summit by an easy path with large snow slopes. We continue climbing until we reach the top, where we can get some splendid views of the surrounding peaks. After spending some time on the top, we descend to the base camp from the western side. Overnight in a tent at Base Camp.
Early in the morning, we leave the base camp and move ahead towards Nar Phedi. We walked for around six hours today. We traverse the Saribung pass and trek down steeply through the snowy trail to follow a small stream. Our descent down the pass is quite challenging as we come across many crevasses. We continue descending until we reach the Phedi, which will be our halting point for the day. Overnight at a guesthouse in Phedi.Â
Our walk for the day is quite pleasing and interesting as we walk along the barren valley with magnificent views of the Himalayan peaks around. We continue walking along the trail until we reach Phu Gaon, which is considered one of the hidden valleys in the Mustang region of Nepal. The culture, religion, lifestyle and natural diversity of this village is a phenomenon, and our walk can be an interesting encounter with the people of different ethnic groups like Lama, gurung and Ghale. We can see the people engaged in activities like subsistence agriculture and animal breeding for livelihood. An old Buddhist monastery, Tashi Lakhang Monastery, is also an interesting place to visit in Phu Gaon. Overnight at a guesthouse in Phu Gaon.Â
Today, we leave the deserted valley and walk towards Meta. On the way, we will come across the Phu River. We follow the river until we reach Meta. On the way, we will be blessed with the beautiful views of Kangaroo Mountain, Pokharkhan and Amotsang Himal. Overnight at a guesthouse in Meta.Â
Today, we will make our way to Koto, and we will walk along the Nar Khola and pass thick pine and rhododendron forests to Koto. Our way today will be quite tiring as the path undulates up and down; however, the enchanting views of Mt.Manaslu, Mt.Hiunchuli, Lamjung Himal and Annapurna II will keep going. We stop at a guesthouse in Koto for an overnight stay.Â
Early in the morning, we take a local jeep that will take us to Besisahar. We pass villages like Dharapani and Jagat to Besisahar. From Besisahar, we take a tourist bus that will bring us back to the bustling city of Kathmandu. The scenic route along the Trishuli River for the day will make your ride wonderful. Overnight at a hotel in Kathmandu.Â
Today you will rest after a long period of climbing. You can rest or have a sightseeing round Thamel, and you can also shop for souvenirs to mark the end of the adventurous journey. Stay overnight at a hotel in Kathmandu.
Your adventure on this trip comes to an end today! We will take you to the airport, approximately 3 hours before your scheduled flight. On your way home, you will have plenty of time to plan your next adventure in the wonderful country of Nepal. Â
