TRIP DETAILS

We’ve designed this 9-day Mustang Luxury Trek itinerary to take full advantage of the existence of a couple of ‘comfort lodges’ aka luxury trekking lodges in Lower Mustang, Pokhara-Jomsom flights annd the new Kali Gandaki ‘road’ to thus afford a relatively easy, spectacular trek to a less visited part of Nepal that was previously the domain of the hardy, serious trekker undertaking the Annapurna Circuit.

Firstly, you’ll visit Upper Mustang as far as you can go to experience life on the ‘other side’ of the Himalaya, where the Tibetan influence and an altogether different landscape are clearly visible. For what is a relatively short jeep ride partway down the Kali Gandaki Valley, the sudden change from an arid plateau to that of dense forests and lofty peaks is quite astounding. Now, from an ‘eagle’s nest’ location high above the valley floor and with stupendous views of Dhaulagiri, the Nilgiris, and Annapurnas, you’ll enjoy one of the most beautiful short Himalayan walks to be found anywhere.

The Mustang Luxury Trek itinerary with Himalaya Sacred Trek & Expedition offers one of the most beautiful short Himalayan walks anywhere, combining comfort with adventure. The added luxury of proper beds, en-suite facilities, and warm hospitality each night enhances the experience, making this sacred Himalayan journey ideal for trekkers seeking cultural depth, natural beauty, and refined comfort in the heart of Mustang.

Highlights of the Mustang Luxury Trek

  • Pokhara-Jomsom scenic flights
  • New Kali Gandaki Road

Itinerary

Day 01Arrival in Kathmandu

We complete our customs formalities at the Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. Afterwards, there will be a representative from our company who will take you to your hotel. We can then spend the rest of the day resting. In the evening, we get to try Nepalese cuisine at a welcome dinner hosted by our company. Overnight in Kathmandu.

Day 02Drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara (820m, 5-6 hours)

We start our day early in the morning to go to Pokhara. The view of the Nepalese countryside offers green hills, rivers, farms, etc., around a 5-6 hour drive. A city that offers us the magnificent view of various mountains, namely Dhaulagiri, Manaslu, Machhapurche and other mountains of the Annapurna range. Do some last-minute shopping and self-exploration around Pokhara. Overnight at a hotel.

Day 03Fly from Pokhara to Jomsom (2,740m, 25 min) then Trek to Kagbeni (2,800m, 3 hours)

We depart from Pokhara and head to Jomsom by flying. Then you will land at the district headquarters of Mustang and begin our trek to Kagbeni, the starting point of the Upper Mustang, where you can keep your eyes busy with the spectacular views of Nilgiri, Dhaulagiri, Tukuche Peak, and Dhampus. Kagbeni is the most interesting typical Tibetan village and the entry point of the Upper Mustang for an overnight stop. Overnight at a lodge.

Day 04Trek to Upper Kali Gandaki and Back to Kagbeni (2,800m, 4 hours)

Today’s walk will not be long in duration, not only so that you’re not overly exerted with the altitude, but also to allow for a slow pace to soak up this very special, different part of Nepal. Crossing the river by the suspension bridge at Kagbeni, you’ll follow a trail along the opposite side of the valley heading further up the Kali Gandaki. Across the valley, as well as the Nilgiri Peaks, the high pass of the Annapurna Circuit (Thorong La) can be seen. Vegetation is now almost non-existent, and you’ll see wind-eroded formations on the hillsides. Reaching a small village, chances are you’ll be the only foreigners around as trekkers and vehicles use a route on the other side of the valley. After exploring the village, you’ll walk back to Kagbeni across the flat, valley floor. Walking time approx. 4 hours with around 150m ascent and descent. Overnight at a lodge.

Day 05Drive from Kagbeni to Thasang (2,700m)

Today you’ll travel by a locally chartered Jeep along the ‘road’ that has now been forged through the Kali Gandaki Valley. Passing back through Jomsom you’ll halt at the beautiful village of Marpha and explore the village on foot and then take a leisurely lunch before continuing your journey down the Kali Gandaki (although it seems almost level) to Larjung, from where a bumpy dirt road takes you to the tiny village of Thasang (2,700m) and your spectacular located accommodation, high above the valley and beneath towering Dhaulagiri. Overnight at a lodge.

Day 06Trek from Thasang to Sekong Lake (2,725m) and Back to Thasang (2,700m, 5 hours)

It’s certainly worth rising early; the sunrise views as the early morning light catches the summit of Dhaulagiri are incredible. After breakfast, you’ll head out on foot and descend to the valley floor to cross a tributary river by means of a bridge. Close to here, you pick up a trail that leads up through pine forests, and after a couple of hours, you emerge above the tree line and reach the sacred waters of Sekong Lake. Right above you tower Dhaulagiri and across the valley the peaks of the Annapurna range and the omnipresent Nilgiris. After a picnic lunch by the lake, the trail descends to another smaller lake and ultimately the valley floor, from where you trek back up to Thasang. Walking time approx. 5 hours with around 450m ascent and descent. Overnight at a lodge.

Day 07Drive from Thasang to Pokhara (820m, 6 hours)

A journey down the sometimes bumpy and dusty, but always spectacular, Kali Gandaki valley and back to Pokhara, which usually takes around  6 hours. Overnight at a hotel.

Day 08Drive from Pokhara to Kathmandu (1,400m, 5-6 hours)

On this day, we will drive back to Kathmandu. Upon reaching Kathmandu, we will transfer you to the hotel, and then you can rest or shop for souvenirs to mark the end of the adventurous journey. Stay overnight at a hotel in Kathmandu.

Day 09Transport to Airport for Final Departure

Your adventure for this trip comes to an end today! We will take you to the airport, approximately 3 hours before your scheduled flight. On your way home, you will have plenty of time to plan your next adventure in the wonderful country of Nepal.
