TRIP DETAILS

Chulu West Peak Climbing is part of the greater Damodar Himalayan range, located in the Manang District of western Nepal, to the north-east of the renowned Annapurna Mountain Range. This spectacular trekking and climbing route rewards adventurers with magnificent views of Mt. Annapurna I, Annapurna II, Dhaulagiri, Manaslu, and many other surrounding peaks. The first successful ascent of Chulu West Peak was achieved by a Japanese expedition team in 1953.

This 16-day Chulu West Peak Climbing, carefully designed by Himalaya Sacred Trek and Expedition, takes you through tranquil landscapes, lush alpine vegetation, rich traditional culture, and dramatic mountain scenery. The Annapurna region is regarded as one of the most beautiful trekking destinations in the world, with Annapurna and Dhaulagiri standing as iconic giants of western Nepal. Reaching the summit of such a stunning peak offers not only breathtaking views but also a profound sense of personal achievement.

The journey passes through the arid yet striking Manang Valley, often described as a slice of heaven on earth, showcasing its unique settlements and distinct landscapes. Along the way, trekkers enjoy green meadows, rolling hills, alpine pastures, and dramatic mountain terrain. The best seasons for Chulu West Peak climbing are autumn (September-November) and spring (March-May), when the weather and visibility are at their best.

While the trekking portion of the journey is adventurous yet relatively moderate, the actual peak climb is more demanding and technical. Climbers must use specialized mountaineering equipment during the ascent. Although Chulu West is classified as a permitted trekking peak, it is more technical than Chulu Far East Peak (6,059 m). Therefore, climbers must be physically and mentally well-prepared, with good stamina and a strong level of fitness. With professional guidance and support from Himalaya Sacred Trek and Expedition, this climb offers an exciting and rewarding introduction to high-altitude Himalayan peak climbing.

Highlight of the Chulu West Peak

  • Includes the amazing Annapurna Circuit Trek
  • One of the highest trekking peaks
  • Accompanied by an experienced Sherpa climbing guide
  • Challenging yet technically straightforward
  • Amazing summit views of the Annapurna ranges

Itinerary

Day 01Arrival in Kathmandu

We complete our customs formalities at the Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. Afterwards, there will be a representative from our company who will take you to your hotel. We can then spend the rest of the day resting. In the evening, we get to try Nepalese cuisine at a welcome dinner hosted by our company. Overnight in Kathmandu.

Day 02Drive from Kathmandu to Besisahar (760m, 7-8 hours)

From Kathmandu valley, we will start our journey to a small but old town of Besisahar. The sight of hills as well as deteriorating rivers will keep us fascinated during the journey. The ride will be about seven to eight hours long. We will be spending the night in a local lodge after arriving at Besisahar.

Day 03Drive from Besisahar to Chame (2,650m, 4-5 hours)

After having breakfast, we will head towards Chame, viewing the beautiful scenery of the vicinity. On the way, we can view the beautiful region of Dharapani, crossing the great Marshyangdi River. The vegetation and settlements start to be different from here as we will be at a higher altitude. The influence of the Tibetan lifestyle is strong in Chame. Also, the view of the Peak is beautiful from Chame, and we will spend the night in a local teahouse after arriving at Chame.

Day 04Trek from Chame to Pisang (3,250m, 5-6 hours)

Today, our journey leads the trek to Pisang, a small village along the bank of the Marshyangdi River. We will walk through beautiful coniferous forests and small settlements of mountain people. A steep and narrow path through a very dense forest will bring us to a dramatic curved rock face, rising 1500m from the river. As the trail opens up, we get surrounded by majestic Himalayan Peaks. After walking through these wonderful suites, we reached Pisang. Overnight at Lower Pisang.

Day 05Trek from Pisang to Manang (3,540m, 6-7 hours)

There are two routes that we can follow today. If you take the upper route, i.e., the route through Upper Pisang via Geru, the scenery will be outstanding. We feel like we are horizontally in front of the majestic peaks. The panoramic view of the mountain peaks, such as Annapurna, Pisang Peak, and several others, will definitely allure us. We notice a contrast with the landscape and vegetation from today onwards. The cold and dry climate creates a much harsher environment. We pay a memorable visit to the Barge monastery, the largest in the entire district of Manang. Overnight in Manang.

Day 06Rest Day at Manang for Acclimatization/Exploration

Today is the scheduled acclimatization day. It is not recommended to stay idle, but a short walk to a higher altitude will be better to get acclimatized with the altitude. Manang is a good place to do that, as the next two days will be a very challenging and tiring trek for us with rapid gain in altitude. We should never be confident with the altitude and always be cautious. Bhojo Gompa or Gangapurna Lake is worth visiting from an acclimatization point of view. We made an easy excursion a little distance away to a village called Vraga, a small old village with a monastery. At this juncture, we also make our short trip to the Himalayan Rescue Association, where we can get some ideas about Mountain sickness. Overnight at Manang.

Day 07Trek from Manang to Ledder (4,200m, 4-5 hours)

From Manang, we continue through alpine landscapes with high-altitude vegetation and forests. A gradual ascent takes us to Yak Kharka and then to our camp. Our camp area today is most used as an alpine pasture by the local people.

Day 08Trek from Ledder to Chulu West Base Camp (4,900m, 4-5 hours)

Today, we continue our trek from Ledder to Chulu West Base Camp. From the base camp, we can enjoy the views of the Annapurna Himalayas. We may also like to discover the surroundings. At this point, we will set up our camp for an overnight stay.

Day 09Trek from Chulu West Base Camp to High Camp (5,600m, 4-5 hours)

It will be a challenging climb, and we trek up to High Camp under full guidance. We will climb along the ridgeline and also along the technically demanding ascents to the High Camp. On reaching High Camp, we will find a proper place to set our camp. And if we have time, we will be doing the pre-climb training as well. We will rest and sleep early as our climb begins early in the morning. Overnight at a tented camp.

Pre-Climb Training: Our guides will provide training on peak climb techniques and the proper ways of using climbing gear such as the ice axe, climbing boots and crampons, harness, ascender, etc. The training will also use a rope to go up and down. The training experience will boost your confidence and climbing skills to increase the chances of scaling the summit, as well as to fully enjoy the experience.

Day 10Trek from High Camp to Summit (6,419m) & Back to Base Camp (4,900m, 7-8 hours)

Today will be the most fascinating day of the journey as we will climb the Chulu West Peak. We begin the climb early, around 1-2 am, as the winds in the mountains tend to intensify at midday. We will walk along the slippery, icy ridges using the trekking gear with our climbing guide. As we summit the peak, we will be rewarded with the views of the majestic peaks in the Annapurna range. After enjoying some time, we descended back to Base Camp and then overnight at Base Camp. Overnight at a tented camp.

Day 11Trek from Base Camp to Thorong Phedi (4,540m, 5-6 hours)

The trek today begins as we head along the Kone Khola, which runs all the way up to our destination for the day, Thorong-La Phedi. We will follow the destination trail along the Kone River to the wooden suspension bridge. From here, the trail ascends through the narrow, rough hills to Thorong La Phedi. Stay overnight at the lodge.

Day 12Trek from Thorong Phedi to Muktinath (3,800m) via Thorong La Pass (5,416m, 6-7 hours)

Today, we will descend along the trail following the Thorong Khola (river) and traverse along the riverbank up to the Thorong La Pass (5,416m). This pass is also the World’s largest pass and offers stunning views of the Annapurna and Chulu masses. From there, we will trek above the forests and farmlands for about five hours to reach Muktinath. Muktinath is a revered religious site for Buddhists and Hindus. A famous sacred temple of Lord Vishnu is situated here with 108 stone taps. Stay overnight at the lodge.

Day 13Drive from Muktinath to Jomsom (2,740m, 1 hour)

We will descend to Jharkot, which is a famous Thakali village. It has a diverse Tibetan culture with the Thakali as the primary inhabitants. From Jharkot, we will descend to Kagbeni and then to Ekle-Bhatti. We will traverse along the dense forests of pine and fir to reach Jomsom. Jomsom is famous for strong mid-day winds and has plenty of modern luxuries such as the internet and restaurants. Overnight at Jomsom.

Day 14Fly from Jomsom to Pokhara (820m, 25 minutes)

On this day, we will fly back to Pokhara and then transfer you to your hotel in Pokhara. The offers scenic treats throughout, and the diverse landscapes and towering peaks are a relief to sore eyes. Upon reaching Pokhara, we can rest or enjoy the beautiful city and its attractions. The lakeside area is especially famous for offering lively nights.

Day 15Drive Back from Pokhara to Kathmandu (1,400m, 5-6 hours)

On this day, we will drive back to Kathmandu along the Prithvi Highway. The drive presents beautiful roadside settlements and gorgeous landscapes all the way to Kathmandu. Upon reaching Kathmandu, we will transfer you to the hotel, and then you can rest or shop for souvenirs to mark the end of the adventurous journey. Stay overnight at a hotel in Kathmandu.

Day 16Transport to Airport for Final Departure

Your adventure in Nepal comes to an end today! We will take you to the airport, approximately 3 hours before your scheduled flight. On your way home, you will have plenty of time to plan your next adventure in the wonderful country of Nepal.
