Yalung Ri Peak (5,630m) is a non-technical mountain located in the eastern part of Nepal, within the remote and scenic Rolwaling Valley. The climb involves a mixed route of rock, ice, and snow, making it an excellent objective for beginner mountaineers or trekkers with limited to no prior climbing experience. Yalung Ri serves as an ideal introduction to Himalayan mountaineering while still offering a genuine alpine challenge.
Although considered a beginner-friendly peak, Yalung Ri is not a walk-up climb. The ascent requires the use of basic mountaineering equipment, including crampons, an ice axe, ropes, and fundamental rope-work skills. The climb begins from base camp with a traverse across rocky terrain, gradually leading into a glacial section where crampons are required.
From the crampon point, the route continues toward the summit via a moderate, non-technical ridge composed of snow and rock. The climb presents few technical difficulties, but sections reach slopes of up to 40 degrees, demanding steady footing, proper technique, and physical endurance. The ridge route offers a rewarding alpine experience with a classic mixed-climbing environment.
While Yalung Ri’s altitude is relatively lower compared to many Himalayan peaks, it still demands respect due to high-altitude conditions and changing mountain weather. Proper acclimatization, suitable mountaineering gear, and a well-planned itinerary are essential for a safe and successful ascent. Himalaya Sacred Trek and Expedition ensures that all these aspects are thoroughly addressed through a well-structured itinerary focused on safety and summit success.
Our carefully designed itinerary addresses all key aspects of acclimatization and safety to maximize summit success. The summit push involves an ascent of approximately 700 meters from base camp, typically completed in a single day.
Departure Location: Kathmandu
Return Location: Kathmandu
We complete our customs formalities at the Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. Afterwards, there will be a representative from our company who will take you to your hotel. We can then spend the rest of the day resting. In the evening, we get to try Nepalese cuisine at a welcome dinner hosted by our company. Overnight in Kathmandu.
Today is set aside for peak climbing preparation and briefing. We will organize and check all necessary climbing gear and equipment, review the climbing route and itinerary, and attend a detailed briefing. After completing the preparations, if time allows and participants are interested, we may explore nearby sites. This day ensures everyone is fully prepared as we begin our peak climbing journey from tomorrow.
After leaving Kathmandu, we drove toward Chechet Khola via Charikot. Situated on a hilltop, Charikot offers scenic views of Gaurishankar Mountain, Melungtse, and other surrounding Himalayan peaks. The drive passes through charming rural villages and small towns, providing a glimpse of local life in the region.
Upon reaching Chechet, located near Jagat village, we began our trek. The trail ascends steadily for approximately two hours through forested paths and terraced hillsides, leading us to our first overnight stop at Simigaun.
From Simigaun, we will follow the trail that passes through additional Sherpa villages. With magnificent views of Gaurishankar just above the Rolwaling valley, we continue to follow the trail that heads through a beautiful pine forest before making a climb onto a rocky ridge. A gradual descent from the top of the ridge will lead us to Rolwaling Khola and then towards Dovan. Overnight at a teahouse.
Leaving Dovan, we will continue to walk along the bank of the Rolwaling Khola. We walk through dense forest filled with rhododendrons and pine trees with the stunning views of Gaurishankar. After crossing the suspension bridge, we will gently ascend to an open plan area where the Sherpa village of Bedding is situated. Overnight at a teahouse.
Day six is a crucial rest and acclimatization day at Beding, located at an altitude of approximately 3,790 meters in the Rolwaling Valley. This planned pause allows trekkers to adapt safely to the increasing altitude before continuing to higher elevations.
The day is spent staying in Beding and engaging in light activities such as short walks around the village, interacting with the local Sherpa community, and observing daily mountain life. If conditions and energy levels allow, a gentle acclimatization hike to a slightly higher elevation may be undertaken, following the principle of “climb high, sleep low” to support the body’s natural adjustment to thinner air.
Adequate rest, proper hydration, and close attention to individual physical conditions are emphasized throughout the day to minimize the risk of altitude-related issues and to ensure a safe and comfortable progression for the days ahead.
Today we will have a short and easy trekking day. From Bedding, we will make an easy gradient through fir trees. As the valley becomes broader and flatter, we continue our trek to reach Na village. Na is a scattered village where there are plenty of tea houses, and it offers good camping options. Overnight at a teahouse.
Day eight features a rewarding acclimatization hike to the magnificent Tsho Rolpa Lake, a vast glacial lake located at an altitude of approximately 4,580 meters. The hike from Na to Tsho Rolpa and back is both challenging and scenic, typically taking around 3-4 hours round trip.
The trail passes through rugged, rocky terrain and offers breathtaking panoramic views of surrounding snow-capped peaks, glaciers, and the striking turquoise waters of the lake. Time is spent exploring the lakeshore, taking photographs, and allowing the body to further acclimatize to the higher elevation.
After enjoying the serene alpine environment of Tsho Rolpa, we descend back to the village of Na for another overnight stay, ensuring adequate rest and recovery following a physically demanding day at high altitude.
From Na, we trek toward Yalung Ri Base Camp, following a steady uphill ascent that takes approximately three hours. As we gain elevation, the Rolwaling Valley gradually opens up, revealing surreal views of surrounding Himalayan peaks and dramatic alpine landscapes.
Upon reaching base camp, we take time to rest and enjoy lunch while soaking in the high-mountain environment. In the afternoon, a comprehensive climbing training session is conducted by our experienced guides. During this course, you will learn and practice essential mountaineering skills required for the ascent of Yalung Ri, including the use of crampons, ice axes, rope techniques, and basic glacier travel, ensuring you are well prepared for summit day. Overnight at camp.
Day ten is the most important and rewarding day of the Yalung Ri expedition, dedicated to reaching the summit and descending back to the village of Na. An early pre-dawn start is required to take advantage of stable snow conditions and favourable weather.
The ascent follows a mixed route involving rocky sections, glacial terrain, and snow slopes, where the use of crampons, ropes, and ice axes is essential. Under the guidance of experienced climbing leaders, the route gradually gains altitude toward the 5,630-meter summit. The final ridge offers a steady but demanding climb, rewarding climbers with spectacular panoramic views of the Rolwaling Himal, including Gaurishankar and surrounding peaks.
After spending time on the summit to celebrate the achievement and capture photos, we begin a careful descent back to Yalung Ri Base Camp and continue onward to the village of Na (approximately 4,200 m). The long descent makes for a physically demanding day, but one filled with a strong sense of accomplishment and unforgettable Himalayan scenery. Overnight at a teahouse.
We departed from the village of Na and began our trek toward Kyalche. The trail gradually descends in altitude, offering a more relaxed pace after the summit push. As we make our way down the valley, we pass through alpine landscapes, forested sections, and occasional small settlements, providing fresh perspectives of the surrounding Himalayan scenery.
The trek typically takes around 5-7 hours, depending on trail conditions and group pace. Upon reaching Kyalche, we settle in for an overnight stay, enjoying a well-earned rest in a peaceful mountain setting. Overnight at a tea house.
We trek from Kyalche to the charming village of Simigaun. The trail follows the Rolwaling Khola and continues with a gradual descent through forested paths and along the riverbanks, making for a relatively easy and pleasant walking day.
The trek takes a few hours at a comfortable pace, allowing ample time to enjoy the natural beauty of the Rolwaling Valley, including lush forests, flowing rivers, and surrounding mountain views. As we approach Simigaun, scenic vistas of the village and nearby peaks unfold.
Simigaun is a traditional Sherpa settlement renowned for its warm hospitality, rich culture, and beautiful mountain setting. Upon arrival, we settle in for our overnight stay and reflect on the journey through this remarkable Himalayan region. Overnight at a teahouse.
We depart from Simigaun and travel by road back to Kathmandu. The scenic drive winds through mountain roads, river valleys, and small rural settlements, offering a final glimpse of Nepal’s diverse landscapes.
Upon arrival in Kathmandu, you will transfer to your hotel and have time to rest after the journey. Depending on arrival time, you may choose to explore the city, enjoy a meal at a local restaurant, or simply relax and reflect on the unforgettable experience in the Rolwaling Valley and the Yalung Ri Peak expedition.
Your adventure in Nepal comes to an end today! We will take you to the airport, approximately 3 hours before your scheduled flight. On your way home, you will have plenty of time to plan your next adventure in the wonderful country of Nepal.
